A Year of Mozilla

Teach

“The best way to learn is to teach” and as a result I’ve taken the chance to not only facilitate events, but also to teach my Web development skills to others. Both online through video hangouts using the online platform now known as Pursuitery1, and offline at events.

Starting the year I did this with a lot of support from trained professionals including my supervisors, and other team members. I learned a lot about how to allow the learner to find their own way to solutions instead of enforcing a linear flow. Towards the end of my placement I’ve taken taken these learnings and helped craft full learning experiences.

ThinkBig Brussels

One such occasion where I was responsible for this was at the ThinkBig Brussels launch in March 2014. Working with Michelle, was put in the driving seat for facilitation and mentoring of a group of 160+ students for an afternoon of webmaking.

Over the course of the morning learners were prototyping physical devices using LittleBits with Technology Will Save Us. When it came to the afternoon they were tasked with creating a single page Website to help reflect on their learnings while promoting their creation.

I was responsible for creating the template that the learners would use, as well as guiding them through the process of writing the HTML/CSS to remix this template for their own projects. This has since been res-used several times by ThinkBig at their own events around the world.
